2023 SCI National Conference

The Society of Composers, Inc. is pleased to announce a call for works for its 2023 Online National Conference, hosted by Beth Wiemann and the SCI Executive Committee.

This conference will take place virtually during the weekend of June 2 through 4, 2023. We recognize the need for a national, peer-reviewed conference for our members, and despite the challenges that this (post?) COVID-19 world presents, we are excited to come together virtually to share music, knowledge, and ideas.

Deadline for submissions: March 15, 2023

Anticipated notification of accepted submissions: April 15, 2023

Works can be submitted on our New Music Engine page here!

Range (mezzo-soprano/contralto): F3 to G5 or A-flat 5 with the tessitura comfortably sitting G4 to E5.

Preferred languages: English, German, Latin, Spanish, French, or Italian

Aesthetics: Neo-tonal preferred, no improvisation preferred

Please submit a digital score (PDF) and a recording (mp3) for consideration. (a MIDI mockup is acceptable if no live recording is available)

Concert 2

Works for soprano Madeleine LaFollette and pianist Michael McAndrew

Range (Full Lyric Soprano): Bb3 to C6

Comfortable Range: C4 to Bb5; Tessitura comfortably sitting from C4 to F5

Preferred languages: English and German, but French, Latin, and Italian are also possible.

Aesthetics: Open to any thematic material. Prefers lyrical, sustained phrases. Capable of movement, but not consistently like a coloratura would prefer. Capable of any type of harmonic language.

Concert 3

Works for members of the Forward Motion ensemble (flute and/or clarinet with or without electronics). Additional information about these ensemble members may be found at this Website Link.

Please submit a digital score (PDF) and a recording (mp3) for consideration. (a MIDI mockup is acceptable if no live recording is available)

Concerts 4 & 5

Pre-recorded works by performers provided by the composer, or pre-recorded composer-performed works. These could include fixed media and/or prerecorded electronic performances, video works, improvisation sessions, etc.

You may submit a video link of a live performance, or a video link that shows the score as the piece progresses.

Single movements of multi-movement works will be accepted.

You must submit the video that you want presented during the conference. You cannot submit a demo or rough recording with the intention of submitting something of higher quality in the future.

All concerts will be streamed live via the SCI YouTube channel. SCI will combine all submissions into a single cohesive stream per concert. Submissions for Concerts 1, 2, and 3 will be reviewed by our Guest Artists. All other concert submissions will be evaluated by a panel of SCI-member peers. Any questions about this call may be directed to the SCI General Manager (Andrew Martin Smith) at secretary[at]societyofcomposers[dot]org
