Call for Scores

The Society of Composers, Inc., Region IV Conference will be held Nov. 6-8, 2003, at Stetson University School of Music in DeLand, FL, with Syd Hodkinson as featured guest composer. Ensembles for the conference will include the Stetson University Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Choir, Brass Ensemble, Trombone Choir, and faculty and student performers. The following instruments will be available as soloists or in chamber ensembles: fl, ob, cl, bsn, hn, tpt, tbn, tuba, perc, pf, organ, hpsi, vn, va, vc, db, SATB voices. Submissions from composers providing their own performers are encouraged. Electro-acoustic music for live electronics, acoustic soloist or ensemble and electronics, or playback alone may be submitted. DAT and CD playback, DVD playback with video, a Macintosh G4 computer, and various keyboards and synthesizers are available.

Each composer may submit one or two pieces. There is no established limit on duration but feasibility of performance will be a consideration. Attendance at the conference is required of all composers whose works will be performed. Receipt deadline: Apr. 16. Submissions must include: score, indicating duration and any technical requirements; separate cassette or CD recording for each submission; SASE; separate page with composer’s name, address, telephone numbers, e-mail address, and list of pieces submitted with durations; list of performers’ names, if the composer will provide them.

SCI welcomes proposals for papers, panel discussions, workshops, demonstrations, and other types of presentations. Papers are limited to twenty minutes. Panels, workshops, and other collaborative sessions could take up to one hour. Proposals may deal with any aspect of composition and new music, including but not limited to, compositional techniques, career development, music technology, music preparation, performance supervision, cultural and stylistic context, and musical aesthetics. A video projector will be available as will various forms of playback including CD, DAT, VHS video, and DVD. Receipt deadline: Apr. 16. Proposals for papers must include: a one-page double-spaced typewritten abstract of approximately 250 words; a short description of your expertise or experience with the topic; SASE; list of any technical requirements.
