Introduction
Dear Colleagues,
The Society of Composers Region VIII conference, with its 5 concerts scheduled for April 11 and 12, 2003 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, will feature works for brass quintet, chamber choir, chamber opera, computer-generated sound, film opera, mixed chamber ensemble, orchestra, percussion ensemble, solo piano, solo instruments and tape, string quartet, string orchestra, trombone choir, wind ensemble, wind quintet, and Palm ensemble.
Eve Beglarian will be the keynote guest. She will speak about post-911 composing. The final concert of the conference will feature Eve’s Book of Days, a stunning work for soloists, mixed chamber ensembles, and video.
Chris Shainin, the executive director of the Washington Composers Forum, will share his experience advocating for composers in Washington state and Donivan Johnson will present archival materials of the International Webern Society.
We invite you to a pre-conference banquet with regional specialties on Thursday, April 10 and an informal dinner with BBQ chicken and ribs prior to the evening concert on Friday, April 11. We also have scheduled a walking tour of historic downtown Ellensburg.

Travel Information
To Ellensburg from Yakima
A van will meet you (without charge) at the Yakima airport on Thursday afternoon, April 10, at approximately 4:30pm for the (approximately) 30 mile drive to Ellensburg (please confirm your interest in this option). Or, alternately, rent a car at the airport and take I-82 or the Yakima Canyon Road.
To Ellensburg from Seattle
Rent a car at the Seattle-Tacoma airport for the (approximately) 110 mile drive on a portion of I-90 known as the Mountains to Sound Greenway which runs across the Cascade Mountains, through Snoqualmie Pass, and on to Ellensburg.

Lodging at the CWU Munson Conference Center if reserved and paid by January 30:
$30 per night (double occupancy)
Lodging at the CWU Munson Conference Center if reserved and paid after January 30:
$40 per night (double occupancy)

Conference participants can share rooms to lower the per night rate at the Conference Center to $15. Please send e-mail as soon as possible if you would prefer this option; but please do not assume that the $15 rate is available until you have been paired with another conference participant.

After January 30, room reservations can only be made by credit card directly to the Munson Conference Center. After January 30th, if the Munson Conference Center does not have space, lodging is subject to room availability at Ellensburg motels.
