Call for Participation

The Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) announces a Call For Participation in the 2008 SCI National Conference to be held from February 20 – 23, 2008 at the Georgia State University School of Music, Atlanta, GA. Composers who are members in good standing with SCI are invited to submit compositions for performance consideration in seven categories (see below for details) or proposals for paper presentations/lecture recitals/panel discussions. Composers may submit a maximum number of three scores. All submissions must include the following:

  • Name of Composer
  • One page brief biographical sketch (include institutional affiliation if applicable)
  • Contact Information (phone number(s); email; street address)
  • Maximum of three scores clearly identified by category (as listed below)
  • Duration of each submitted work
  • CD Recording (strongly encouraged). Please do not send cassette tapes, DATS or audio files via the Internet. Each submitted work should be contained on a separate, individual CD clearly labeled with the composers name, title of work and the category of submission. Individual movements of a single work must be on separate tracks and clearly indexed. If more than one work is submitted to the same category, the works may be contained on the same CD. There is a preference for recorded performances of works contained on CDs (except in the case of electronically generated pieces). However, MIDI realizations will also be accepted.
  • Statement agreeing to attend the conference should a work or works be accepted.
  • SASE if you want submission materials returned.

Deadline for Submissions

Scores: September 15, 2007 (Postmark)
Papers/Panels/Lecture Recitals: October 15, 2007 (Postmark)
Notification of Accepted Works: November 15, 2007

Adjudication: For all categories except Category VII, Ensemble Directors will make final determinations on selected compositions. For the remaining category, a panel of three composers will convene to make final selections.

If works are selected for inclusion, the composer must attend the conference.

Category I: Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Robert J. Ambrose, Director

  • Maximum instrumentation is as follows:
    • 1 piccolo
    • 4 flutes (1 may play/double on alto flute)
    • 2 oboes (1 may play/double on English horn)
    • 7 B-flat clarinets (1 may play/double on E-flat clarinet)
    • 1 bass clarinet
    • 2 bassoons (1 may play/double on contrabassoon)
    • 4 saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone OR 2 altos, tenor, baritone)
    • 6 trumpets
    • 4 horns
    • 3 trombones
    • 2 euphoniums
    • 2 tubas
    • 6 percussion
    • piano
    • If harp or celesta parts are included, they must be optional
  • Works should be a maximum of 20 minutes. There is no minimum.

Category II: Georgia State University Percussion Ensemble, Stuart Gerber, Director

The Percussion Faculty/Department at Georgia State University is issuing an SCI call for scores for the following:

Percussion solos, duets, trios, quartets, or quintets (with a special emphasis on duos). Trios or quartets need not be comprised entirely of percussionists, but may also include one or two, respectively, of the following instruments as well: flute, clarinet, viola

Compositions may use all “standard” Western percussion instruments, as well as many non-Western instruments. If there are specific instrumental questions you may contact Dr. Stuart Gerber via email (swgerber@gsu.edu) or telephone (404.217.0495).

Category III: Bent Frequency

Hailed as “one of the brightest ensembles on the [Atlanta] scene” (Gramophone, April 2004), Bent Frequency invites composers to submit works that contain the following instruments (or any subset):

  • flute (doubling on piccolo and/or alto flute)
  • clarinet (doubling on bass clarinet and/or Eb clarinet)
  • violin
  • viola
  • cello
  • percussion (1 player)
  • piano

Maximum duration of submitted compositions: 15 minutes

Category IV: neoPhonia New Music Ensemble

Beginning its thirteenth season in residence at Georgia State University, this “much admired” (Atlanta-Journal Constitution) ensemble invites composers to submit works that contain the following instruments (or any subset):

  • flute (doubling piccolo)
  • oboe
  • clarinet
  • bassoon
  • saxophone (up to 4 players: sop., alto, ten., bari.)
  • horn
  • trombone
  • percussion (up to 2 players)
  • piano
  • violin
  • viola
  • cello

Maximum duration of submitted compositions: 15 minutes

Any specific questions concerning the neoPhonia score call should be addressed to the conference host.

Category V: Kenneth Long, Clarinet

Dr. Kenneth Long, Coordinator of Woodwind Studies at the Georgia State University School of Music invites composers to submit works for unaccompanied clarinet, clarinet and piano or clarinet and electronic sounds.

Category VI: Electronic / Electro-Acoustic Concert

Because the Kopleff Recital Hall at GSU is undergoing major renovation at the time of this score call, we can only guarantee that electronic music will be accepted for diffusion over 1-2 channels. The music technology program at Georgia State University will endeavor to meet any reasonable technical requirements.

Available technology includes:

  • Playback via CD, DVD, DAT, ADAT, sound file
  • Video projection (NTSC/PAL, standard computer video formats (e.g. QuickTime, MPEG2), DVD)
  • Live sound reinforcement/playback: mixer, microphones, outboard equipment, etc.

This list is not exhaustive; feel free to contact the conference host with questions about technical possibilities.

Category VII: Performers Provided by Composers

Composers may submit works for any instrumentation. If selected for presentation at the conference, it will be the composer’s responsibility to provide the performers as well as provide for their respective travel/lodging and any other fee expenses.
