Conference Announcement

The 2006 Region VII SCI conference will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico April 2-5 in conjunction with the University of New Mexico John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium. Pulitzer prize winning composer Roger Reynolds will be the featured guest and renowned percussionist Steven Schick and his highly acclaimed percussion ensemble Red Fish Blue Fish will together perform Mr. Reynolds’s complete percussion works during the symposium. Concerts will be held both at the University of New Mexico and the Outpost Performance Space.

There will also be a paper presentation session that focuses on the music of Roger Reynolds. Papers should be 20 minutes in length and proposals should include a one-page abstract and complete contact information. Submission deadline for papers is January 15 (Postmark deadline).

About the symposium:
The University of New Mexico has held consecutive composers’ symposia for more than thirty years making it one of the longest running festivals of its kind. Previous guests include John Cage, Ernst Krenek, Lou Harrison, Joan Tower, Michael Colgrass and many, many others. Albuquerque is centrally located and there is easy access to Santa Fe (one hour) Taos (three hours) and many of New Mexico’s most important cultural attractions including several pueblos within easy driving distance.

Submission Guidelines

Submission Deadline for Music Scores: October 15, 2005 (postmark)
Submission Deadline for Paper Presentations: January 15, 2006 (postmark)
Notification of Accepted Works: December 15, 2005

Judging Process: Selection of scores will be made by faculty composers in conjunction with the performers appearing in the conference.

Available Instrumentation:
SCI Composers are invited to submit a maximum of two compositions for most instruments and small chamber combinations. There may also be the possibility of accepting scores for chamber orchestra and choir. Performers will be drawn from University of New Mexico students and faculty. There will also be performers available from both Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University. Additionally, composers may bring their own performers. Electroacoustic compositions are also encouraged and will be integrated into the vocal/instrumental concerts rather than presented at a separate event. Electroacoustic works are welcome.

Composers may submit up to 2 works for consideration. Due restraints, we are not able to consider works longer than 20 minutes (recommended).
