Conference Dates: April 2-4, 2009

The Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) will hold its next National Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on April 2-4, 2009. The conference will be held in conjunction with the 13th Annual Santa Fe International Festival of Electroacoustic Music, and will be hosted by the College of Santa Fe’s Contemporary Music Program, Steven Paxton, Chair. Member of SCI are invited to submit compositions for performance consideration, and/or proposals for paper presentations or lecture recitals, and proposals for sound installations. Submission details are included in the 2009 SCI National Conference Call for Participation.

Concerts of works by SCI members will be held at historic downtown Santa Fe performance venues and at the College of Santa Fe. Performers will include soloists and ensembles from the University of New Mexico and the College of Santa Fe, along with professionals from the Santa Fe music community.

The conference focus will be on electroacoustic music, sound installations, and works related to Acoustic Ecology. Also solicited are compositions involving rock band, Javanese gamelan, African drum ensemble, Celtic instruments, traditional folk instruments from America and other parts of the world, or combinations of any of these with traditional concert instruments and/or electronics. Works for conventional combinations of instruments and/or voices are also encouraged, especially chamber music.

Guest speakers will include ethnomusicologist Steven Feld, and the keynote speaker, composer Annea Lockwood. Steven Paxton, Chair of the Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe, will be the conference host, and David Dunn, Visiting Professor of Electroacoutic Music and Acoustic Ecology at CSF, will curate the electroacoustic music presentations, paper sessions, and sound installations.

The conference hotel will be the Eldorado Hotel in downtown Santa Fe, with a nightly rate of $139 plus local taxes. Flight into Albuquerque International Airport is recommended, with regular shuttle service being available to the Eldorado, the College of Santa Fe, and other Santa Fe locations.
